SPEAKERS
The XII Pan-American section congress will host plenary top-notch talks by prominent scientists and research presentations.
Distinguished Plenary Speaker

Professor Bruce Bean
Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. Did his Ph.D. research in Biophysics at the University of Rochester studying neuronal sodium channels with Peter Shrager, did post-doctoral work in cardiac electrophysiology with Richard W. Tsien at Yale University Medical School, and has had previous faculty positions at the University of Iowa and at the Vollum Institute of Oregon Health Sciences University. His research interest is in the physiological function and pharmacology of ion channels, with a particular interest in using drugs and toxins as tools to understand how multiple ion channels control firing patterns of mammalian central neurons, to understand pathophysiology in disease states, including epilepsy, neuropathic pain, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson ’s disease. During the last three years Dr. Bruce has been doing research in topics as: TRP channels as drug portals to block calcium channels and synaptic transmission, potassium channel and hyperexcitability screen for novel ALS therapeutics, selective targeting of sodium channel blockers to pain-sensing neurons, novel pain treatment development, and the mechanism of action of novel sodium channel inhibitors.
